About Us

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

Who we are

We’re a friendly, family orientated, multicultural, multi-site community of believers who live in and around St. John’s and Gander Newfoundland Labrador. With attendees from all points of the globe and all walks of life, we are a group of people who are growing in Christ within this community of faith. God’s love for us motivates us to show the love of Jesus Christ to those we meet.

The best way to find out who we really are is to join us! We meet at both sites Sundays at 10:30 AM

Where we come from

The roots of The Crossing Church can be traced back to 1954 when The Baptist Federation of Canada was instrumental in establishing the first Baptist church in Newfoundland and Labrador. Portugal Cove Road was selected as the site for the new church. It soon became apparent that a second church would have to be established in the west end of the city. In 1967 a committee known as the West End Committee, met in the First Baptist Church to plan for the establishment of a second Baptist church in the city. A site for the new church was selected and purchased. Dedication of the property site at 314 Topsail Road was held on October 29, 1967.

West End Baptist St. John's

In May 1969 West End Baptist church was recognized as a new Baptist church by the Newfoundland Baptist Association. Within the year, seeing potential of a camping ministry, the Camp Property located in Blaketown was purchased through the efforts of the West End Baptist men’s brotherhood.

In 1971 while continuing to conduct services in a local school, plans were put in place for the construction of a new church building. On October 28, 1973, the new church building was dedicated. In May of 1978 the decision was made to expand the facilities to accommodate the growing congregation. In 1981 the building project was completed, adding a new sanctuary, pastor’s office, secretarial space, and washroom facilities.

Gander Baptist Church

In the early to middle 1960’s the vision for a Baptist church in Gander was supported in no small part by Rev. Freeman Fenerty, the Pastor of First Baptist Church, John’s NL, who travelled by the then incomplete Trans-Canada Highway to Gander each week.  Pastor Fenerty drove by car on the new gravel highway to meet with a small but faithful group of people, meeting in the Orange Lodge. In the late 1960’s, with the support of the Atlantic Baptist Home Mission Board, a church parsonage was built and the cornerstone for the new church building was laid in 1969.  Rev. Bloyce Crawford was inducted as the first pastor soon after. This church served the community of Gander for the next 50 years.

The Crossing Church - One Church Two Locations

In 2019, in addition to celebrating 50 years of ministry, the congregations of West End Baptist and Gander Baptist voted to join becoming one church in two locations under a new name “The Crossing Church”. As a unique Multisite Ministry, given the geographical distance (330Km or 3.5 hours’ drive) between our two sites, The Crossing church is looking forward with great anticipation to what God will do next as we strive to ‘Live and Love Like Jesus’, extending the reach of His gospel in the Town of Gander and the City of St. John’s!

The Crossing Church Mission

Our mission is to be a church where people feel welcome to worship God and know they belong, where the Holy Spirit transforms lives through the Bible and inspires us to become more like Jesus, sharing His love and message of hope, serving in our community and the world. The Crossing Church exists to live out the Great Commandment and the Great Commission:

Matthew 22:37-40 “Jesus replied, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Matthew 28:19-20 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
